La Paz Fishing Report / February 23rd 2019

Weather & Bait

This past week we definitely experienced better weather, lighter winds and warmer temperatures. All good signs that should translate into better fishing. Our crowds have been light this week perhaps due to Carnival. Late nights with family and friends enjoying the festivities and concerts don’t make kind for early mornings chasing fish in rocking boats.

Water temps have been metered between 69-75 degrees.
Bait is so plentiful in the bay that the dorado have taken up permanent residence. In fact the only thing slowing you down when making mackerel are the schools of Dorado eating the bait right off your sabíkis. These fish are running 10-15lbs and are literally right in front of PEMEX.
I definitely recommend to anyone choosing to fish offshore to slow troll a couple of Mack’s either on your way out or on your way back. This is a guaranteed limit, 2 fish per angler and a blast on light tackle, not to mention great eating.

Fish Talk

Offshore the yellowtail bite has not really started yet. Although, we are catching fish every day, they have not settled in and are still moving around looking for their spring homes and spawning areas. Hopefully in the next week or so this will happen and game on. We had one charter fish all the way North to Las Animas. This is way out of our normal one day trip but that’s what we do at BACO what the others guys won’t, anyway this area is is truly one of the best yellowtail spots in the sea of Cortez. Long day with a big Nada on the fish. We were all very surprised.

Next week isn’t looking so good weather wise. Strong northerlies will dominate the first half of the week making for tough fishing conditions. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.
I hope as we advance into spring the water and weather conditions will become more favorable and the traditional feeding patterns will start to normalize.

Until next week,
Keep the faith
