why fish in la paz ?

La Paz is a truly charming town. Beautiful white sand beaches, lots of wildlife, 300+ days of sunshine, and best of all… consistently great fishing.

Depending on when you visit, certain species will be “in season” and easier to target and catch. We’ll take your group to spots that are most productive. One day we might fish the seamounts for big amberjacks and pelagic species, and the next we might jig the reefs for grouper or snapper — it all depends on what’s biting and where.

Come down to La Paz to explore the calm, sheltered waters of the Sea of Cortez and experience some of the most epic and diverse fishing in Baja.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON A LA PAZ FISHING TRIP

Day trips to legendary spots like El Bajo, El Charro, La Reina, La Cruces, and many others — all of which are close enough to town to give you tons of fishing action in a single day…

Opportunities to catch a wide range of species including yellowtail, amberjack, dorado, marlin, sailfish, wahoo, roosterfish, grouper, and snapper — we target different species depending on the season…

Top brand equipment, some of the best sportfishing boats available, and highly experienced guides with intimate knowledge of our local waters — they know where to go and the techniques to use to get you hooked up!

Accomodations

We are proud to have partnered with Puerta Cortes Resort, the only luxury development in town, offering several lodging options from the beautiful Costa Baja Hotel, sea view condos or hillside homes that can accommodate groups of friends and families alike. why go fishing off the grid ?

The Pacific side of southern Baja is one of the most remote places in the peninsula, there are no major cities from Ensenada to Cabo San Lucas and access to this location is usually difficult for tourists.

We’ve been exploring the Pacific side of La Paz for a few years now, and every time we go, we discover new spots that completely blow us away. The fishing here is truly world class !

To explore the rich offerings of the area, we use a 23-foot panga that we beach launch straight into the Pacific Ocean. The days are spent fishing  different spots that hold an incredible amount of fish — there is no shortage of top-notch locations or the fish that roam these waters

FISHING FROM RANCHO LA AGUJA

Located approximately one hour north of La Paz, Rancho La Aguja is our preferred fishing destination on the Baja Sur Pacific coast. This mid-Pacific coast region is pure, timeless old Baja, huge sweeps of beach broken by remote rocky points, sometimes offering premium surfing.

A line of reefs parallels the mid-Pacific coast and stretches for hundreds of miles. These reefs are perfect locations for reef species such as giant Broom Tail and Gulf Grouper, Pargo and Yellowtail among others. We usually catch these species by jigging or using live bait.

Not too far from shore, there are several deeper spots where schools of small Yellowfin Tuna and good size Wahoo and Dorado congregate. It is not uncommon to catch our limits of this species in a few hours. However, if what you are after is a giant Yellowfin Tuna, thanks to the location of our camp we have a direct shot at some of the most prolific banks in Baja, normally only fished by long-range boats from San Diego.

Accomodations

Accomodations at Rancho la Aguja are cozy glamping tents with comfortable cots, and all other camping gear is provided. The camp has bathrooms and showers as well as a kitchen to cook the catch of the day.

A firepit is always in order and of course, the area itself is an off grid paradise for spearos, surfers and anglers looking for the best baja experience.

magbay

why go fishing in Magdalena Bay ?

Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the Baja Peninsula, Bahía Magdalena, or Mag Bay, is one of the most legendary yet remote fisheries in North America. This 30-mile long bay, famous as a home to the gray whale during its southern migration, is formed by two sandy barrier islands named Isla Magdalena/Isla Margarita and provides incredible inshore and offshore light-tackle fishing.

Target species include Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Dorado (Mahi), Yellowtail, Wahoo, Grouper, Snapper, Snook and more.

FISHING IN MAGDALENA BAY

Magdalena Bay is a large sheltered bay on the Pacific side of Baja. It’s one of the longest bays on the Pacific coast, roughly the same size as San Francisco Bay. A chain of barrier islands protects the bay from the vast Pacific Ocean, creating an ideal environment for a thriving population of marine life including all the most popular species of game fish. The bay is also a hotspot for California gray whales from January to March.

The fishing in and around Magbay is out of this world. Access to the area is generally difficult, which has limited the ability for larger charter operations to move in. It’s just us, a handful of local seasonal panga fishing guides, and the occasional long-range fishing yacht passing by.

In the bay, over 70 miles of mangrove-lined channels provide a seemingly endless source of light-tackle and fly-fishing entertainment for species such as Grouper, Pargo, Snook among others. Just on the other side of the barrier islands, some of the most productive offshore banks provide world-class fishing for droves of pelagic species. One such place is Thetis Bank, where every year in November, a phenomenon happens where a huge number of striped marlin move in and “pile up.” If you time it right, it’s marlin fishing like you’ve never seen before with shots at double-digit hookups.

Accomodations

Traditionally accessible only by private yacht or costly 8-plus day long range trips out of San Diego, CA, our exclusive island-based package gives our customers full access to all that Mag Bay has to offer!

Lodging at Magdalena Island consists of a three room/three bath main guest house with an additional three bed/full bath cottage and a large outdoor palapa kitchen and dining area. The palapa is the main hangout and provides beautiful views of the bay while guests dine on fresh seafood and Mexican cuisine prepared by our cook.

With over a decade of experience and several packages and boat options available we are your best choice for conventional fishing, fly fishing and spearfishing in Mag Bay!

TIPS

why go on a liveaboard trip ?

Living aboard is one of the most convenient options for fishing several days and being able to reach the spots that day trip boats just can’t. Our team will make the voyage of your dreams a reality, with several options ranging from comfortable catamarans, to luxury sportfishing yachts, these crewed vessels will feature one of our center console boats as a fishing tender.

Dreamy anchorages in remote locations will only add to the value of having the freedom to decide how to spend your days out there. Fishing, diving, snorkeling, kayak and SUP are a few of the options available. Whether you’re here with friends or family, the getaway factor has never been greater.

Yacht or Catamaran

Depending on the number of guests in a group, and the sleeping arrangements, some parties will be more comfortable in a 4 cabin catamaran, while a couple might prefer the comfort of a master suite inside a yacht.

Whether it’s just a weekend or a whole week, certain boats might have some features that will appeal to the families, while some other options could work best for a group of friends.

Please contact our team so we can get to know you better and come up with a couple of options before we fully customize your trip to suit your specific needs.
